Would You Pay $344 For A Cup of Coffee?

LONDON: A flat white costing a jaw-dropping £272 ($344) might sound absurd, but it comes with an unusual perk: a stake in a Scottish dairy farm.

Mossgiel Organic Dairy is offering what it calls the U.K.’s most expensive coffee as part of its crowdfunding initiative to expand its sustainable operations. Investors who purchase 34 shares in the dairy will receive a certificate redeemable for the exclusive flat white, available starting this weekend at 13 coffee shops in Scotland that use Mossgiel’s organic milk.

Coffee Meets Crowdfunding

“This coffee costs nearly 80 times the price of an average flat white in the U.K. — but it’s much more than just a lovely drink,” said Bryce Cunningham, owner of Mossgiel Organic Dairy. “We know it sounds crazy, but when you break it down, it’s a pretty good deal. How much is the future of farming worth?”

The initiative is part of Cunningham’s effort to raise £300,000 from small investors to secure a £900,000 loan. The funds will help him double production and expand his operations beyond Scotland, with plans to supply coffee shops as far as London.

More Than Just a Cup of Coffee

The £272 price tag outdoes the previous record set by Shot London, which sold a flat white for £265 using rare beans from Okinawa, Japan. However, Mossgiel’s offer includes more than just coffee. Shareholders receive additional benefits such as farm tours, discounts on milk deliveries, and invitations to exclusive events.

Investors are cautioned that they could lose some or all of their money — except for the guaranteed coffee.

A Historic Farm With a Modern Mission

Located in Mauchline, about 25 miles south of Glasgow, Mossgiel Organic Dairy boasts a rich history. The farm was once worked by Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, whose face now graces each glass bottle of Mossgiel milk.

Cunningham, a former Mercedes-Benz service manager, took over the farm in 2014 after losing both his father and grandfather to terminal illnesses. Faced with plummeting milk prices, he sold most of the herd and reinvented the operation as an organic farm.

The farm uses a unique “brewing” process for its milk, which Cunningham says delivers the creamy taste and texture of raw milk without the associated health risks.

Praise for Mossgiel Milk

Todd Whiteford, co-owner of The Good Coffee Cartel in Glasgow, said Mossgiel’s milk has been their choice for years, despite “outrageous offers” from competitors.

“Theirs is the best. I’ll argue with anyone about that,” Whiteford said, praising the milk’s quality and consistency, which he believes enhances the flavor and texture of cappuccinos, lattes, and flat whites.

A Virtuous Cup

While the £272 coffee is identical to the £3.10 flat white other customers can order, Cunningham says the experience comes with a deeper sense of purpose.

“They’ll have the self-transcendence that coffee is doing greater good than just perhaps buying it otherwise,” he said, highlighting the project’s commitment to sustainable farming and a better future.
