NEW YORK, NY — Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, stepping in during the show’s final episode before Election Day to give some advice to her fictional counterpart, played by Maya Rudolph. “You got this,” Harris reassured Rudolph, who has frequently portrayed the vice president on the show.

The episode’s cold open featured a spoof of CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins, which showcased a satirical take on a Trump rally before cutting to a fictional Harris event in Philadelphia. In the sketch, Rudolph’s “Kamala” confided in the second gentleman “Doug Emhoff,” played by Andy Samberg, before expressing a desire to speak with someone who’s “been in my shoes, you know, a Black, South Asian woman running for president, preferably from the Bay Area.”

Rudolph then sat across from the real-life Harris in a set that looked like a dressing-room mirror. Dressed and styled almost identically, the two engaged in a lighthearted exchange, with Harris offering words of encouragement. “You can do something your opponent cannot do. You can open doors,” Harris told her comedic alter ego.

Rudolph then humorously exaggerated Harris’s signature laugh, prompting the vice president to ask, “I don’t really laugh like that, do I?” To which Rudolph replied with a grin, “A little bit.”

The episode featured other notable impersonations, including Jim Gaffigan as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Dana Carvey reprising his role as President Joe Biden. Harris’ cameo coincides with the final push of her campaign’s media tour, aiming to reach voters in diverse spaces, including recent interviews with Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy and Charlamagne Tha God.

Hosted by comedian John Mulaney with musical guest Chappell Roan, SNL used the opportunity to lean into its history of political satire, including previous appearances by major political figures. In this episode, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, currently running for reelection, also made a humorous cameo on a fictional game show called What’s the Name? where he jokingly asked contestants to identify him, referencing his time as Hillary Clinton’s running mate.
