BEIJING — A chemical plant explosion in China’s eastern Shandong province sent massive plumes of black smoke into the sky around noon Tuesday, state broadcaster CCTV reported, shaking homes and rattling nerves across the area.
Local videos showed the blast’s force shattering windows over two miles (three kilometers) away. One resident, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, described how his home trembled from the explosion and how he saw towering smoke columns from more than seven kilometers (4.3 miles) away.
Blast Occurs at Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co.
The explosion erupted at Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co., located in an industrial park in Weifang city. The facility manufactures pesticides and chemicals for medical use, employing over 500 workers, according to corporate records.

Authorities swiftly dispatched rescue teams to the scene. More than 230 firefighters were deployed, according to CCTV. As of Tuesday afternoon, officials had not confirmed any casualties or the extent of the damage, though assessments were underway.
