Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody following an “active shooter situation” at a Georgia high school on Wednesday morning, leading to a temporary lockdown.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed that the suspect had been apprehended shortly after the shooting at Apalachee High School, which prompted the lockdown, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
As a precaution, all schools in Barrow County were placed under lockdown, the sheriff’s office announced around 11:30 a.m. ET.
While the sheriff’s office did not provide further details about the incident, they assured that additional information would be shared soon as deputies remained on the scene.
Media reported that the school notified parents at 10:45 a.m. local time, saying, “Apalachee High School is currently in a hard lockdown after reports of gunfire. Law enforcement is here. Please do not attempt to come to the school at this time while officers work to secure the area.”
Although no official reports have confirmed injuries, media observed a person being airlifted to a hospital. Media also reported that a second individual was taken away in an ambulance.
Aerial footage broadcasted by media showed a large police presence at the school’s athletic field, with people gathered on the field and in the bleachers.
Parents picking up children are now being allowed to pick up their children from the school. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and FBI Atlanta have agents on-site, coordinating efforts with local law enforcement.
“Our agents are on scene coordinating with and supporting local law enforcement,” the FBI in Atlanta stated on its Facebook page.
