Wisconsin Teacher Fired for Including Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton Song in Concert

Wisconsin Teacher Melissa Tempel, a first-grade teacher at Heyer Elementary School in Waukesha, Wisconsin, was terminated by the school board on Wednesday following a dispute over the inclusion of Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton’s song, “Rainbowland,” in a concert. The decision drew criticism from students and parents who had been eagerly anticipating the performance.

“Rainbowland” is a song that portrays a fantasy world where harmony prevails. However, the Waukesha school board deemed it too controversial and decided to exclude it from the set list for the spring concert. This decision led to disappointment among the first-grade students, who had prepared and rehearsed the song.

Tempel voiced her frustration on social media, violating the school board’s policy that requires employees to address grievances with supervisors before venting online. On March 21st, she tweeted, “My first graders were so excited to sing Rainbowland for our spring concert but it has been vetoed by our administration. When will it end?”

As a consequence of her social media posts, Tempel faced a hearing with school officials to discuss her termination. Her lawyers argued that her posts were an exercise of free speech rights, while Superintendent James Sebert contended that they had brought negative attention to the school district, considering her disagreement with the decision.

Ultimately, Tempel was fired for violating three school policies related to her online venting. The hearing attracted protesters from both sides of the controversy. Tempel took to Twitter to announce her termination, expressing her disappointment but also her determination to continue fighting for what she believes is right.

Superintendent Sebert clarified that the decision to terminate Tempel was not solely based on her choice to include the song in the concert. He stated that the board found her in violation of multiple policies, causing disruption to the district. He emphasized that the decision was not about any particular song but about the proper process for expressing concerns in accordance with board policy.

Sebert acknowledged the importance of free speech and open debate but highlighted the district’s obligation to enforce reasonable boundaries when employee speech negatively affects the learning environment. He argued that Tempel’s testimony and evidence during the hearing demonstrated her misrepresentation of her supervisor’s decision, which posed a liability to the district and threatened the well-being of students and staff.

Tempel, devastated by her termination, asserted her commitment to being a teacher despite the board’s decision. She stated that outside of her working hours, she maintains her rights as a citizen teacher with First Amendment protections. Tempel intends to channel her energy into raising awareness about what she perceives as discriminatory policies in public school districts, particularly those imposed by groups like Moms for Liberty.
