North Carolina Man Arrested for Fatally Shooting Driver Accused of Killing 17-Year-Old Son

A man from North Carolina is currently confronting a second-degree murder charge following a fatal shooting incident involving a driver who had struck and killed his teenage son early Monday, as confirmed by local authorities.

Chad Woods, aged 41, was apprehended at his residence in Timberlake, a community situated approximately 21 miles north of Durham. The arrest occurred subsequent to an alleged altercation in which Woods shot and fatally wounded Jeffrey McKay, aged 39. The incident unfolded shortly after McKay had reportedly struck and killed Woods’ 17-year-old son. This chain of events was described by Sgt. Kevin Morris of the Person County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Morris, the tragic collision occurred at around 6 a.m. on Dink Ashley Road when McKay’s Ram pickup truck collided with the teenager. McKay promptly dialed emergency services, notifying them of the accident and the resultant fatality. The unidentified teenager was subsequently pronounced dead at the accident site by medical personnel.

At this juncture, specific details regarding the circumstances leading to the collision are not yet readily available.

In the aftermath of the collision, Woods allegedly took decisive and tragic action. Reports indicate that he shot and killed McKay shortly after the collision, and then proceeded to appropriate McKay’s truck. Woods subsequently drove the truck to his home, situated less than a mile away. Regrettably, Woods left his deceased son’s body at the scene of the incident. These disheartening details were provided by Sgt. Morris.

In addition to the serious charges stemming from the fatal altercation, Woods is also facing allegations of motor vehicle larceny due to his involvement in taking possession of McKay’s truck, as confirmed by Morris.

Sgt. Morris mentioned that Woods had a prior criminal record, although detailed information about his history was not immediately forthcoming.

The authorities were able to locate Woods at his residence through an identification process that included the assistance of minors. Morris further noted that there was evidence of an additional individual present at the scene, inferred from a background voice audible in the 911 call recording. Law enforcement agencies are actively working to ascertain the identity of this individual.

At present, it remains unclear whether Woods has legal representation, and no information has been provided regarding his scheduled appearance in Person County Court, according to Morris.

North Carolina’s legal guidelines stipulate that second-degree murder carries the potential of a maximum life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Jeffrey McKay was identified as a maintenance worker within the North Carolina Department of Corrections, as conveyed by Sgt. Morris. However, attempts to confirm McKay’s employment with a departmental spokesperson proved unsuccessful as of Monday afternoon. McKay resided in Youngsville, a town located approximately 40 miles southeast of Timberlake, according to information provided by Morris.
