In a dramatic incident on Thursday morning, a worker was rescued after falling into a narrow gap between two buildings on Broome Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The incident occurred at approximately 9:09 a.m. and involved a fall of about 30 feet, equivalent to approximately three stories.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) took immediate action by cutting open a wall to access the trapped worker and extricate him from the tight space. Division Chief Mark Bonilla of EMS commended the swift response, stating, “They were able to breach the wall and we were able to place one of our rescue medics on the scene to begin patient care immediately on the victim until he was eventually removed and transported to a local area hospital.” Battalion Chief John Leverock of the FDNY also highlighted the quick medical attention provided to the worker, mentioning that EMS was able to attend to him promptly.
While the worker regained consciousness, his current condition remains unknown. Fortunately, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Throughout the rescue operation, the worker remained awake and communicative with the EMS personnel, though he did express some discomfort in his head.
The rescue operation posed significant challenges due to the nature of the situation. Chief Leverock explained, “It was very difficult. We had a solid concrete wall. The members took about a half hour to breach the wall. We made a cut about six feet wide by two feet high. We eventually pulled the worker out through the hole.” Ensuring the worker’s safety was paramount, so caution was exercised to avoid any accidental harm during the rescue process. The use of partner saws with concrete blades and jackhammers allowed the team to carefully create an opening without endangering the worker further.
