Alexander Stubb, the former Prime Minister of Finland has won a closely contested presidential runoff vote on Sunday. He is set to take office in March and hold key responsibilities concerning foreign policy, security measures and crucially ensuring that Finland integrates well into NATO’s core structures as an important member.
The center-right National Coalition Party’s representative, Stubb, emerged victorious with 51.6% of the votes in a highly competitive race against former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto from the green left who obtained 48.4%. Despite his previous position as Finland’s top diplomat between 2019 and 2023, Haavisto was defeated by Stubb in their final round showdown for office.
As President Sauli Niinistö’s second six-year term draws to a close next month, Alexander Stubb takes over as a prominent political figure in Finland. A runoff was required when none of the initial nine candidates received enough votes for an absolute majority on January 28th. In line with Finland’s culture of consensus-driven politics, Stubb demonstrated his respect by attending Haavisto’s election party after the results were confirmed. This exemplified the campaign’s respectful tone and goodwill gesture towards one another despite being opponents during elections.
As the most prominent political leader in Finland, the president holds a crucial position in influencing foreign and security policies alongside the government. Nevertheless, it is also his duty to remain impartial towards domestic political matters and act as an ethical guide for the country.
Editorial commentary suggests that with Finland’s recent joining of NATO in April 2023, spurred by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, the presidency holds greater importance as it oversees national security matters including military command. With uncertainties surrounding America’s dedication to NATO heightened by former President Donald Trump’s statements recently made public; there may be challenging times ahead which Stubb will need to carefully navigate – possibly even during war situations.
Stubb, who is 55 years old, possesses a vast amount of political expertise for the position. Before this role, he has served as prime minister, finance minister, and foreign affairs minister, along with holding an array of other high-ranking positions in ministries. His academic career primarily focused on international politics, which further solidified his qualifications as a professor at one point in time.
Throughout his campaign, Stubb placed significant emphasis on Finland’s unwavering attitude towards Moscow. He also stressed the significance of augmenting security connections with Washington and asserted the importance of providing military and economic support to Ukraine. International leaders extended warm felicitations upon his triumph, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who highlighted a mutual pledge towards European security.

Starting his presidency at a crucial moment, Stubb faces scrutiny over Finland’s global relationships and its role in European security as the voter turnout slightly decreases during the runoff election compared to the first round.
