Elton John bids farewell to his Peachtree Road residence, parting ways with over 900 cherished items from his former Atlanta abode, sold in October for a staggering sum exceeding $7 million.

Addressing prospective buyers, John expressed sentiments of passing on his collection with fondness, acknowledging the joy each possession brought him and hoping they find new homes that appreciate them just as much.

Among the extensive array are flamboyant stage costumes, artworks, jewelry, a plethora of timepieces, furniture, a pinball machine, and notably, his beloved Yamaha Conservatory grand piano, a muse for crafting iconic melodies such as “Daniel,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Cold Heart,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” for loved ones.

The apartment, boasting panoramic views of the city skyline, features lavish amenities including a personal gym, massage room, and an opulent bathroom adorned with onyx. With a desire to downsize and prioritize time with his sons at his other residences, John initiates the auction of these cherished possessions at Christie’s, spanning from the sale’s commencement on Friday until Feb. 21.

The eclectic collection encompasses a spectrum of artworks, ranging from the risqué to the iconic, including rarities like an original Banksy piece, works by Keith Haring, and Damien Hirst’s signed creation “Your Song.” Noteworthy too is an erotic print by Ryan McGinley titled “Two Heads,” once displayed in John’s personal quarters. Additionally, the auction includes a selection of photographs from luminaries such as Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.

Christie’s Deputy Chairman, Tash Perrin, underscores the significance of these items, offering a glimpse into John’s life and inspirations. The decision to part with these possessions was emotional, reflective of a thorough deliberation process aimed at avoiding storage for any item.

Also up for auction is a closet housing over 100 vintage Gianni Versace shirts, alongside Versace china, glassware, and dining accouterments, a testament to John’s enduring friendship with the late designer. Furthermore, his cherished 1990 Bentley, redolent with memories of drives through Atlanta and the South of France, is available for acquisition.

Enthusiastic fans, like Mercedes Heuer of South Carolina, express admiration for the opportunity to bring a piece of John’s legacy into their homes. At Christie’s preview in New York City, aficionados eagerly observe his eclectic tastes in art, fashion, and furniture, all once housed in the sprawling 13,500-square-foot mansion. Notably, the very table where John conceived the idea for his AIDS foundation is among the items available for purchase.

Mike Pappert of Houston reflects on the significance of witnessing these treasures firsthand, attributing John’s decision to share his possessions with a desire to connect with his audience rather than financial necessity.
