Hawaii Crime Boss Michael Miske Dies

HONOLULU — Michael Miske, a notorious Hawaii crime boss convicted of multiple crimes earlier this year, died in federal detention earlier this month due to an opioid overdose, Honolulu’s medical examiner confirmed on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the medical examiner’s office, the 50-year-old died from “toxicity of fentanyl and para-fluorofentanyl,” potent synthetic opioids. While the death appears accidental, the case remains under investigation, and an official autopsy report is expected within 30 days.

Authorities have yet to determine how Miske obtained the fentanyl or para-fluorofentanyl while detained at the Honolulu Federal Detention Center. Para-fluorofentanyl is a synthetic opioid frequently found in illicit drugs and is considered more potent than fentanyl.

The Bureau of Prisons, which oversees federal detention centers, did not immediately respond to inquiries about the incident.

Miske was found unresponsive in his cell on December 1. Despite efforts by detention staff and emergency responders, he could not be revived, officials said.

Convicted of Heinous Crimes

Miske was convicted in July on 13 counts, including racketeering conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeering, and kidnapping resulting in death. Prosecutors accused him of orchestrating a range of violent crimes, such as the kidnapping of a 72-year-old accountant over an unpaid debt, releasing toxic chemicals into rival nightclubs, and the murder of his late son’s best friend.

Following his conviction, the government moved to seize up to $28 million in assets linked to Miske, including boats, homes, and valuable artwork. He was scheduled to be sentenced on January 30.

Broader Concerns in Federal Prisons

Miske’s death highlights ongoing challenges within the Bureau of Prisons, which operates 122 federal facilities nationwide. The agency has faced scrutiny over staff misconduct, chronic understaffing, high-profile inmate deaths, and drug-related incidents.

In a recent case, an inmate and two accomplices were charged in August for mailing drugs to a California federal penitentiary. That incident resulted in the death of a mailroom supervisor who was exposed to fentanyl and other substances while processing mail.
