While it may not be the prestigious Olympics, a spirited group of Floridians is gearing up to host an event that takes inspiration from the peculiar antics of the famous “Florida Man” – known for his love of beer, ownership of alligators, a laundry list of legal troubles, and a signature mullet hairstyle.
The “Florida Man Games,” as envisioned by its organizers, promises to be “the most outrageous athletic showdown on Earth.” Designed as a playful nod to Florida’s reputation for generating bizarre news stories involving firearms, narcotics, alcohol, and reptiles (sometimes all of the above), this event is set to take place in St. Augustine, Florida, in February.
According to the organizers, the games will feature a range of offbeat competitions, including the “Evading Arrest Obstacle Course,” where participants will jump over fences and navigate through yards while being pursued by real police officers. There’s also the “Category 5 Cash Grab,” where contestants will scramble to collect money in a wind-blown booth, and the self-explanatory “beer-belly wrestling.”
The organizers proudly declare on the games’ website, “This isn’t just a competition; it’s a one-of-a-kind Floridian spectacle!”
The “Florida Man” phenomenon first came to national attention a decade ago with the creation of the @_FloridaMan Twitter account, known for its tagline, “Real-life stories of the world’s worst superhero.” This Twitter account has been the source of headlines like “Florida Man Fire Bombs Garage That Impounded His Car, Hits His Own Vehicle” and “Florida Man Tried to Pay for McDonald’s With Weed.”
For a general admission fee of $45, you can be part of this extraordinary event. Adding to the excitement, two former stars from the 1990s television show “American Gladiators” have agreed to serve as referees.

The brainchild behind the Florida Man Games is Pete Melfi, a resident of St. Augustine and the owner of The 904 Now, a media outlet that covers St. Johns County. Melfi shared the inspiration behind the event, saying, “We thought, ‘How can we really play on these Florida Man headlines that we hear so much about?’ Someone gave me the idea to turn it into an athletic competition. It’s going to be a wild day of mud games and Florida-style obstacle courses. It’s a genuine opportunity to experience a day in the life of a Florida Man.”
