ALBANY, N.Y. – An 11-year-old girl who attempted to rescue a 12-year-old boy after he fell through the ice at Washington Park Lake over the weekend has succumbed to her injuries, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The heartbreaking incident occurred Saturday around 4:30 p.m. when the boy ventured onto the frozen lake, attempting to walk across, and fell through the ice, according to a statement from Albany police.
In a heroic effort to help, the girl followed him but tragically fell through the thin ice as well.

Emergency Response
Albany police officers and firefighters rushed to the scene and were able to rescue the girl. She was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital in critical condition. On Tuesday, police announced that the girl had passed away due to her injuries.
The New York State Police dive team recovered the boy’s body at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, police added.
