MALIBU, Calif. – A fast-moving brush fire erupted in Malibu Canyon on Monday evening, prompting mandatory evacuation orders across parts of Southern California, local authorities reported.

Franklin Fire Rapidly Expands

The Franklin Fire ignited roughly 3 miles north of the Pacific Coast Highway and has since scorched over 3,000 acres with 0% containment. Initially estimated at just 10 acres, the fire spread rapidly due to a combination of dry brush and powerful Santa Ana winds.

Evacuation orders were issued for areas east of Malibu Canyon Road, south of Piuma Road, and the Serra Retreat neighborhood. About 20,000 people remain under evacuation orders and warnings.

In addition, large portions of the affected region are experiencing outages in electricity, cell service, and internet connectivity, leaving many residents in the dark.

Investigation Into the Cause

The cause of the fire remains unknown. However, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone indicated that arson is being investigated as a potential factor.

“The L.A. County Fire Department and the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department are going to join forces with our arson investigators because it’s going to be critical that we learn why this fire started,” Marrone said during the press conference.

Impact on Pepperdine University

Flames were visible overnight from the campus of Pepperdine University. The school canceled classes and finals on Tuesday, with students sheltering in place at two designated campus buildings. Food, water, and power are being provided for those on-site, the university stated.
