Call for a State of Emergency

Unidentified Drone Activity

Residents and officials across New Jersey have reported frequent sightings of large drones, which exceed the size typically associated with recreational use. Despite ongoing investigations by local, state, and federal authorities, the source and purpose of these drones remain unclear.

One notable location of concern is the Picatinny Arsenal, a military research and production facility in Morris County. The Arsenal has documented 11 confirmed drone sightings since November 13, as reported by police officers and security guards.

“While the source and cause of these aircraft operating in our area remain unknown, we can confirm that they are not the result of any Picatinny Arsenal-related activities,” said Picatinny Arsenal Garrison Commander Lt. Col. Craig Bonham II in a statement Tuesday.

Rising Concerns and Demands for Action

The unexplained drone activity has sparked alarm due to its proximity to sensitive areas, including the military installation and President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf course.

A coalition of 21 New Jersey mayors has sent a letter to Gov. Phil Murphy demanding immediate action. Belleville Mayor Michael Melham announced on Facebook that a special briefing exclusively for New Jersey mayors will be held Wednesday. The session, led by the New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, aims to address the ongoing issue.

Limited Legal Authority Over Drone Ban

According to a senior U.S. official, law enforcement currently has limited authority to proactively manage drone activity, focusing primarily on reactive measures.

As investigations continue, the mysterious drones remain a cause for public concern, with officials and residents alike calling for transparency and decisive action.
