Three people lost their lives and two others were injured in a shooting at a home in Hawaii on Saturday night, following a dispute between neighbors, according to police. The shooter was also killed by a resident, who was later arrested on a second-degree murder charge.
Witnesses described how a 58-year-old man used a front-end loader to ram vehicles into a home where a family gathering was taking place. He then opened fire on people in the carport, killing three women at the residence in Waianae, a community about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of downtown Honolulu, said Honolulu police detective Lt. Deena Thoemmes.
During the incident, a 42-year-old man who lived at the home shot and killed the suspect with a handgun, Thoemmes shared at a news conference. Police have not yet provided details on why the resident was arrested, despite inquiries by phone and email.
The three women who were killed were 34, 36, and 29 years old, Thoemmes said. A 31-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were critically injured and taken to the hospital, she added.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was found with four 55-gallon drums containing an unknown fuel in the front-end loader. Witnesses reported that he fired shots into the drums, though police have not confirmed this detail, Thoemmes noted.

These shootings are part of a recent string of violent incidents in the area, prompting police to renew efforts to combat gun violence, said Police Chief Joe Logan at the news conference. However, Logan emphasized that Saturday’s shootings were unrelated to the previous incidents. He acknowledged the challenges in preventing such a targeted act arising from a dispute unless someone had reported concerns earlier.
