Train Derailment Prompts Evacuation in Eastern Kentucky After Chemical Spill and Fire

A train derailment in a remote area of eastern Kentucky has resulted in the spillage of a chemical, prompting officials to advise the evacuation of Livingston, a small town with a population of approximately 200, due to concerns about air quality.

Governor Andy Beshear released a statement indicating that local authorities in Rockcastle County were encouraging residents to evacuate, with reports of a shelter being set up at a local middle school. The derailment, involving at least 16 cars, occurred around 2:30 p.m., according to Bryan Tucker, a spokesperson for CSX, the railroad operator. Two of the derailed cars were transporting molten sulfur, which ignited after the cars were breached. Efforts to extinguish the fire were ongoing as of late Wednesday.

While it is believed that the fire is releasing sulfur dioxide, the exact amount will be confirmed after measurements are taken from air monitoring equipment deployed Wednesday night, according to Tucker. Sulfur dioxide, as per the Environmental Protection Agency, can lead to respiratory problems, depending on concentration and exposure duration. The gas is commonly produced by burning fossil fuels in power plants and other industrial processes.

John Mura, spokesperson for the state Energy and Environment Cabinet, did not provide further information on the quantity of chemicals released.
