OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his confidence in the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) during his visit to Singapore as part of his global tour. Altman highlighted the advancements in language capabilities and computing power, emphasizing that AI can continue to expand exponentially. Speaking to business founders, tech executives, and the public at the Singapore Management University, Altman stated, “The world wants AI, and the market will respond by enhancing models’ efficiency and producing more powerful chips.”

OpenAI is renowned for its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which gained immense popularity for its ability to generate human-like responses. Within just two months of its launch, the chatbot garnered 100 million users. However, training and running large language models like ChatGPT come with significant costs. Altman acknowledged this challenge and stated that OpenAI is committed to making AI more affordable.

“We aim to drive down the cost of intelligence to the point where it becomes so cheap that it requires no second thought,” Altman affirmed. The platform has already managed to reduce inference costs by a factor of ten every few months.

Altman’s tour also included visits to India, China, South Korea, and Japan, reflecting the increasing global interest in AI and OpenAI. During his visit to China’s Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, Altman praised China’s AI talent and called for the country to take the lead in AI regulation. In South Korea, Altman met with President Yoon Suk Yeol and advocated for the nation to lead in AI chip production. Notably, South Korean chip manufacturers Samsung and SK Hynix have been at the forefront of the country’s ambitious semiconductor research and production endeavours.
