According to authorities, a group of migrants were detained on Monday night in the Bronx due to their alleged involvement in various criminal activities across the city. These included stealing phones from women who left them unattended in public spaces.

The New York Police Department apprehended individuals suspected of criminal activity during a search warrant executed at their residence, believed to be a center for such activities.

It is expected that the group comprising of seven suspects will be charged pertaining to several cases of robberies and grand larcenies. The authorities are currently making efforts to find other individuals who might have a connection with these incidents.

As per the authorities, it is reported that every suspect belongs to Venezuelan descent.

According to police reports, over 60 incidents of women having their belongings such as phones and purses snatched away have been consistently linked back to these men.

Authorities described the suspects’ modus operandi as targeting mostly women who were walking alone, approaching them from behind and quickly snatching their belongings before running away.

The investigators have reason to believe that the aim of singling out phones was to exploit the Apple Pay feature and make unauthorized purchases using credit cards connected with these devices in either America or Central America.

According to law enforcement officials, the phones were reportedly sent to Colombia after being stolen and then reset to factory settings in order to remove any evidence of their previous ownership.

After thoughtful contemplation, NYPD Assistant Commissioner Kaz Daughtry utilized X (previously known as Twitter) to express regret that although many immigrants come to New York City seeking a brighter future, some turn to unlawful behavior. Furthermore, he underscored the substantial advancement in addressing one of the city’s most common robbery trends and issued an unyielding cautionary message: lawbreaking would be met with immediate legal action.

During the previous week, at least six asylum-seekers were apprehended for supposedly assaulting police officers in Times Square – a video of which was recorded. Additional suspects connected with this attack are still being sought after by authorities. These arrests make up as another notable instance related to migrant involvement within New York City recently.

The investigation is being complicated by suspicions that the four defendants, who were released without bail, used fraudulent identities to abscond to California. The Manhattan district attorney’s office and law enforcement agencies are currently exploring this angle.
