BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A tragic loss has struck the Alabama A&M University football community as 20-year-old linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. has died following a head injury sustained during a game in October.

The Jefferson County coroner confirmed Burnett’s death occurred on Wednesday evening. The injury, which ultimately proved fatal, was sustained during the annual Magic City Classic against Alabama State University on October 26.

Alabama A&M’s athletic department initially announced Burnett’s passing on Wednesday morning but later issued a retraction.
The second statement clarified that the premature announcement was based on information from Burnett’s immediate family received Tuesday evening.

A Promising Career Cut Short
Burnett, a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, joined Alabama A&M’s football team in the summer of 2023 after beginning his college career at Grambling State University. He was playing his first season with the Bulldogs at the time of the injury.
