Maria Branyas Morera, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person, passed away on August 19 at the age of 117, her family confirmed to media.
Branyas Morera died in Spain at the Residència Santa María del Tura nursing home in Olot, Catalonia, where she had resided since 2000, according to Guinness World Records.
She was bestowed the title of the “oldest living woman” by Guinness World Records after the passing of Lucile Randon, also known as Sister André, who died in 2023 at the age of 118.
Born on March 4, 1907, in San Francisco, Branyas Morera moved to Catalonia with her family and later settled in Barcelona. In 1931, she married Dr. Joan Moret, who passed away in 1976. The couple had three children—two daughters and a son.
“Maria Branyas has left us. She passed away as she wished: peacefully in her sleep, without pain. A few days ago, she told us, ‘One day I will leave this place. I will no longer have coffee, yogurt, or caress the Fairy… I will also leave behind my memories and reflections,'” her family shared in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
