NEW YORK CITY — Woman Set on Fire: A person of interest was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after a woman was set on fire and killed earlier that morning on a subway train in New York City. Authorities are investigating the incident as a homicide.

The victim, an unidentified woman, was believed to be asleep on a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. According to police, an unidentified man approached her and used a lighter to ignite her clothing.

Police have stated there was no prior interaction between the suspect and the victim, nor any indication that they knew each other.

Officers investigating the smell of smoke found the victim engulfed in flames inside the subway car. Despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released.

The suspect fled the subway car immediately after the attack, police said.

Person of Interest in Custody

Later on Sunday, police announced that a person of interest had been taken into custody. The individual, who has not yet been publicly named, was apprehended inside a subway car at Herald Square.

The man was found carrying a lighter in his pocket. Images of the suspect, captured by officers’ body cameras at the scene, were released to the public, and authorities sought assistance in identifying him.

Three high school students recognized the suspect from the released images and contacted the police.

“New Yorkers came through again,” said New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a Sunday evening press conference.

Prior to the arrest, police described the suspect as a man between 25 and 30 years old, approximately 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a dark-colored knit hat with a red band, and brown boots.
