Incident Details
The incident began around 5 p.m. local time when state troopers attempted to pull over the driver of a black pickup truck on suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver refused to stop, leading police on a chase that ended in the parking lot of the Killeen Mall.
The suspect then drove the truck through the glass doors of a JCPenney, striking multiple people.
“Four people were injured as the driver was actively running people over,” Washko said. A fifth victim later sought medical attention independently.
The victims’ ages range from 6 to 75 years old.

Law enforcement officers fired their weapons, ultimately stopping the suspect. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet identified the suspect and are investigating whether the act was intentional or a desperate attempt to evade police.
“Thankfully, he was stopped when he was, because it could have been so much worse,” Washko said, noting that the mall was particularly busy given the holiday season.
