The crash occurred as Michigan State Police troopers managed traffic on I-96 near M-52, where power line installation work by Consumers Energy had necessitated a temporary road closure. Westbound traffic had come to a halt as power lines were installed across the interstate.

Police reported that traffic had just resumed when the semi-truck, traveling in the left lane, failed to stop in time and plowed into multiple vehicles. “It appears the driver of the semi-truck did not see the backup and could not stop his vehicle in time,” Michigan State Police said in a statement.

Following the crash, emergency responders transported 17 people with serious injuries to UM Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Hospital in Lansing. Authorities have not released details about the identities of the victims, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
