A tragic incident occurred at a baseball game in Maryland on Friday night, resulting in the death of a 5-year-old boy and injuries to another child. The children were playing in a bounce house that was lifted 15 to 20 feet into the air by a sudden gust of wind at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland.
The bounce house was set up in the right field stands during a game between the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and the York Revolution, both part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
At around 9:21 p.m., stadium officials called 911 after the wind lifted the bounce house, causing the children to fall before it landed on the field. Charles County officials reported that EMS crews, baseball team trainers, and several volunteer first responders who were present at the game immediately rushed to help the children.
The 5-year-old victim, who was from La Plata, Maryland, was transported to Children’s Hospital but was pronounced dead later that night. The other child sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.
“We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time,” said Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins. “We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care.”
In response to the tragedy, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs canceled their Saturday game and are providing counseling and support to the families, players, and fans affected by the incident.
