CAIRO — A tragic incident unfolded off Egypt’s Red Sea coast as a diving boat sank near the southeastern town of Marsa Alam, leaving over a dozen tourists feared missing, authorities reported on Monday.

The vessel, identified as the Sea Story, sank in the Shaab Satayah area, a region famed for its vibrant coral reefs. The Red Sea Governorate confirmed the incident in an official statement.

Casualty and Rescue Updates

Out of the 45 people onboard, 28 individuals were rescued, while 17 remained missing as of Monday afternoon, officials stated. Among those onboard were 31 tourists from various nationalities, including two Americans, and 14 crew members, according to local sources.

Rescue operations, led by the Egyptian navy, were ongoing Monday. A search-and-rescue helicopter transported several survivors from the Wadi el Gemal reserve area for medical treatment, and a frigate was deployed to assist in the search efforts.

Details of the Incident

The Sea Story had departed from Ghalib Port in Marsa Alam on Sunday for a diving expedition. It was scheduled to dock at Hurghada Marina on Friday, November 29.

Authorities reported that a distress signal was sent at 5:30 a.m. on Monday by a crew member before the vessel lost radar contact. The exact cause of the sinking remains under investigation.
