UNITED NATIONS – A stark report from the United Nations highlights a chilling reality: the most dangerous place for women and girls is often their own home. On average, 140 women and girls were killed daily by intimate partners or family members in 2023, according to data released Monday by UN Women and the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Africa bore the highest burden, with an estimated 21,700 victims in 2023, equating to 2.9 victims per 100,000 people—the highest rate globally. Other regions also recorded alarming figures:
- Americas: 1.6 victims per 100,000
- Oceania: 1.5 victims per 100,000
- Asia: 0.8 victims per 100,000
- Europe: 0.6 victims per 100,000
In Europe and the Americas, most female homicides in domestic settings were perpetrated by intimate partners, underscoring a consistent trend across regions.

The report also noted stark gender differences in patterns of lethal violence:
- 80% of all homicide victims in 2023 were men, with most incidents occurring outside the home.
- In contrast, 60% of female victims of intentional killings were murdered by intimate partners or family members.
“While men dominate homicide statistics overall, women and girls are disproportionately affected by lethal violence in the private sphere,” the agencies stated.
