A tragic plane crash near the Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport in North Carolina claimed multiple lives on Saturday evening.
The National Park Service (NPS) reported that the single-engine aircraft went down around 5 p.m. ET, crashing into nearby woods.
The identities and number of victims have not yet been released. According to eyewitness accounts, the crash occurred while the plane was attempting to land.
After the crash, the aircraft caught fire, which was quickly extinguished by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department along with other local fire units, as confirmed by the NPS.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash, with the Federal Aviation Administration also notified. The Wright Brothers National Memorial remained closed Sunday as authorities continued their investigation.
