Three Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were shot, one fatally, while responding to a disturbance at a Florida home.
One deputy lost his life. Another deputy was hit in the shoulder and is currently in stable condition. The third deputy was shot multiple times in the armpit, groin, and stomach. He has undergone surgery and remains in critical condition, Sheriff Peyton Grinnell reported during a press conference.
Grinnell said deputies initially responded to a disturbance call and, during their investigation, discovered another issue at a nearby home.
Upon arriving at the second location, deputies noticed a back door that appeared to be kicked in and heard a disturbance inside. When they entered the home, there was an exchange of heavy gunfire, and one deputy was hit, Grinnell recounted.
The backup deputy managed to retreat, but the first deputy became trapped inside.
Additional deputies formed a “rescue team” to retrieve the trapped deputy, but they were met with intense gunfire, resulting in another deputy being shot. Despite the danger, they were able to retreat, Grinnell explained.
“It was a very violent scene,” Grinnell stated, describing the incident as an ambush.
Law enforcement then called in the SWAT team due to the heavy firepower involved.

Inside the home, two people were found dead, and another was transported with an unknown condition, according to Grinnell. Multiple firearms were discovered at the scene.
Grinnell confirmed that there is no longer a threat to the public.
