Authorities reported that the couple had exited their home before 5 a.m. to locate their dogs. While in their driveway, the polar bear lunged at the woman, causing her to slip to the ground.
In a desperate attempt to protect her, the man leapt onto the animal to fend it off. The bear attacked him, inflicting serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his arms and legs, NAPS said in a statement.

During the attack, a neighbor arrived with a firearm and shot the bear multiple times, forcing it to retreat to a nearby wooded area where it later died from its injuries.

Police officers dispatched to the scene found the deceased polar bear and learned that the injured man had been transported to a community nursing station for treatment.
