Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson has been ordered by a Texas judge to surrender personal assets to help settle a debt that has grown to over $12 million.
The debt stems from a $5.2 million loan Peterson failed to repay to a Pennsylvania lending company. The initial amount has more than doubled due to interest and fees. As part of a lawsuit judgment, court-appointed receiver Robert Berleth has been working to collect funds from the former four-time All-Pro player.
In July, Berleth requested that constables accompany him to Peterson’s home in Missouri City, a Houston suburb, to inventory assets that could be sold to repay the debt.
“The receiver requests constable accompaniment when receiver levies the numerous assets known to be stored at [the home] to keep the peace and prevent interference with the receiver’s duties,” Berleth wrote in court documents.
On Monday, a judge approved Berleth’s request.
Peterson’s attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. In February, they filed documents seeking to prevent the auctioning of various personal items, including Peterson’s 2007 NFL “Rookie of the Year” trophy, which had been seized from storage units.
Later that month, a judge ordered Berleth to stop selling the items from the storage units.
