The victim, identified as Robert Warren, was serving time in the Maryland state prison when emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead in his cell on Monday, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Maryland State Police.

Authorities have identified a suspect in the case, also an inmate at the facility. However, the individual’s identity has not been disclosed as no charges have been filed yet. Further information is expected after charges are brought, police said.
Maryland officials have not released details about the cause of death or the estimated time of Warren’s passing. However, investigators confirmed the death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation with support from crime scene technicians and the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) Internal Investigative Unit.
“The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit about an inmate death,” the Maryland State Police said in a statement.
Upon completion, the investigation findings will be submitted to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and possible charges.
