In an unfortunate incident reported by the Will County Sheriff’s Office, a man in Illinois tragically took the life of a 6-year-old boy and severely injured his mother, allegedly motivated by anti-Muslim sentiments. This shocking act of violence has been described as senseless and cowardly.
The authorities have revealed that both victims, the young boy and his mother, were deliberately targeted due to their Muslim faith and their connection to the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict between Hamas and the Israelis. While the Sheriff’s Office did not provide additional evidence to support these claims, they stated that, through interviews and evidence gathering, they were able to bring forth two hate crime charges against the suspect.
The victims, a Palestinian Muslim family, had come to the United States seeking refuge, the very same peace and security that all Americans desire, as expressed by President Joe Biden in a statement. The President decried the act of hate as having no place in the United States and extended condolences and prayers to the affected family, including wishes for the mother’s recovery. He also conveyed his support to the broader Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim American communities.
The heartbreaking incident took place in the victims’ residence in Plainfield, where the 6-year-old boy, Wadea Al-Fayoume, was stabbed 26 times by his landlord, a 71-year-old named Joseph Czuba. Tragically, the child did not survive and succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The boy’s mother, aged 32, was also stabbed multiple times and is currently in the hospital. Thankfully, she is expected to recover.
The mother’s account of the horrifying ordeal revealed that she sought refuge in the bathroom while bravely defending herself and managed to call 911 for assistance. Sheriff’s deputies discovered both victims in a bedroom upon their arrival at the scene.
Joseph Czuba has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of committing a hate crime. Notably, he remained silent during interactions with detectives, providing no statements regarding his involvement in the gruesome attack. It remains unclear whether he has legal representation, as the county public defender’s office and the district attorney’s office have yet to respond to requests for comment.
Wadea Al-Fayoume was a child who enjoyed soccer and basketball, having recently celebrated his sixth birthday, as Ahmed Rehab, the president of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), mentioned during a press conference. Rehab pointed out that the tragic incident is a consequence of the prevailing atmosphere of hate, authorization, and dehumanization in the United States.
CAIR revealed that the boy’s mother, Hanaan Shahin, shared text messages with the organization, recounting anti-Muslim statements made during the attack, emphasizing the swiftness of the ordeal, with her noting, “It all happened in seconds.”

In response to this heinous act, the Department of Justice has initiated a federal hate crimes investigation. The incident is feared to exacerbate the anxieties of Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian communities in the United States regarding hate-driven violence. Attorney General Merrick Garland expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and community as they mourn the loss of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a young child who tragically lost his life after a brutal attack involving 26 knife wounds.
