A woman in Manchester, New Hampshire, found herself hospitalized with severe injuries after being rescued from a garbage truck on Monday, according to officials.
The Manchester Fire Department reported that they suspect she ended up in the garbage container behind the truck’s cab, known as the hopper, possibly from a dumpster that had been emptied during the truck’s routine daily route. The woman was discovered amidst compacted refuse, having undergone four cycles of compaction. However, it remained uncertain whether this was the cause of her injuries.
Fire Chief Ryan J. Cashin, commenting on the incident at the scene, mentioned, “She was dumped at some point.”
The circumstances leading to the woman being in the dumpster remained a mystery. Cashin revealed that a sanitation worker noticed her presence in the hopper through the truck’s video system, which was equipped with at least one camera directed inside the container.
When firefighters arrived, the woman was standing and had been calling out for help, as stated in the fire department’s official release.
Her rescue involved deploying a rescue basket from a ladder truck into the hopper, essentially using the ladder truck as a crane.
Following the rescue operation, the woman was transported to Elliot Hospital, a trauma facility. However, specific details about her condition were not immediately available, as the hospital representatives did not respond promptly to requests for comment.
How Humour Creates Good Vibes
Reflecting on the unusual nature of the incident, Fire Chief Cashin remarked, “I have never seen one like this.”
