On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) vowed to enhance security measures following an incident where an under-construction high-end condominium tower, located in close proximity to the Lakers’ residence, was extensively vandalized with graffiti by taggers.
Approximately 30 floors of the 40-story tower in downtown Los Angeles were covered in graffiti. In response to a separate video, the LAPD’s Central Division announced on the social media platform X that it had engaged in discussions with representatives from the City Council district overseeing the Oceanwide Plaza project. The aim of these discussions was to devise improved security measures for the site.
The LAPD assured the public that the new measures would be implemented promptly, and efforts would be made to remove the graffiti from the construction site.
Situated across the street from the Crypto.com Arena, the official home of the Los Angeles Lakers, and in close proximity to the entertainment hub, LA Live, the Oceanwide Plaza project was originally planned to feature two 40-story towers, as outlined on its website.
Construction on the project came to a halt in 2019 due to concerns about the company’s financial capabilities to continue, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times at the time. However, a potential foreclosure was prevented by a state court of appeals in August, as reported by The Real Deal.

This incident is not the first time a construction project in Los Angeles has fallen victim to attention-grabbing graffiti. In a similar occurrence, the newly constructed 6th Street Viaduct in downtown Los Angeles, which incurred a cost of $588 million, was also spray-painted by vandals shortly after its opening in July 2022. Additionally, street racing and takeovers led to periodic closures of the bridge.
