Amid the aftermath of wildfires that ravaged a hiking area in northeastern Greece, the nation’s fire service confirmed the grim finding of 18 bodies on Tuesday.

Positioned to the northeast of Alexandroupoli, a major port city, the remains were located within the scorched landscape. In response to this tragic discovery, a team specializing in disaster victim identification and a group of investigators were promptly dispatched to the affected area.

Authorities, faced with this somber development, are now deliberating on the possible origins of these individuals. The fire service, in a statement published in Greek, expressed that as no reports have surfaced regarding missing residents or unaccounted-for individuals from the vicinity, they are exploring the hypothesis that the deceased might have entered the country through unauthorized means.

Last month, a succession of rapidly spreading wildfires engulfed various parts of Greece, compelling officials to issue evacuation advisories to both tourists and inhabitants across multiple regions.

Notably, the fire service communicated that a total of 112 evacuation notifications were dispatched to the geographic zone where the human remains were ultimately uncovered due to wildfires. However, the precise timeline of when these notifications were distributed remains unspecified.
