Ukraine Sea Drone Attack Causes Damage to Russian Warship

The Russian defense ministry announced on Friday that Ukraine had launched an attack on a key naval base using sea drones. The incident reportedly occurred overnight at the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. While the Russian authorities claimed to have thwarted the attack, the fate of one of their warships remained uncertain as it appeared to have suffered damage during the incident.

According to a statement released by the defense ministry early Friday, the naval base in southern Russia was targeted by two unmanned sea drones during the night. However, Russian ships guarding the outer boundary of the base managed to destroy the attacking drones.

As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage mentioned in the statement. The Russian defense ministry attributed the attack to Ukraine’s armed forces, but Kyiv refrained from making any immediate claims of responsibility. This lack of claim was in line with their usual practice of not commenting on attacks within Russian territory. Conversely, Moscow habitually assigns blame to Ukraine for such incidents without providing substantial evidence.

Videos circulating on Ukrainian social media depicted a ship resembling the “Olenegorsky Gornyak” warship listing to one side and being towed back to the port that Russian authorities stated had been attacked. Using satellite imagery and ship tracking data, NBC News confirmed that the video indeed showed the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk and the same class of warship as the “Olenegorsky Gornyak.”

Novorossiysk, situated in Russia’s Krasnodar region near Russian-occupied Crimea, hosts the naval base as part of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The base has been operational since 1994 and previously played a crucial role in border protection and military transportation before the onset of the war in Ukraine.

Both the Krasnodar region Governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, and the Mayor of Novorossiysk, Andrey Kravchenko, assured that there were no casualties or significant damage from the alleged attack. The mayor specifically praised the crews of “Olenegorsky Gornyak” and “Suvorovets” for their swift response, avoiding serious consequences.

An adjacent oil terminal reported no damage to its infrastructure and stated that its operations remained unaffected.

This incident is part of a series of drone attacks in recent months on Russian territory, including three separate drone attacks on the heart of Moscow within the last two weeks.

Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, amidst the ongoing counteroffensive to reclaim occupied land, had previously warned that the war was gradually reaching the territory of Russia, targeting its symbolic centers and military bases, which he described as an inevitable and fair process.

Earlier in the week, the Russian defense ministry reported another incident involving three Ukrainian unmanned sea drones attempting to attack two patrol ships in the southwestern Black Sea. However, this attempt was also thwarted.

While Kyiv refrains from officially claiming responsibility for attacks in Russia, Ukrainian officials have, on occasion, used sarcastic signals in the aftermath of such incidents. For instance, after the alleged drone attack on Friday, President Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, shared a photo of a Ukrainian soldier flying a drone on Telegram with a caption: “Good Ukrainian morning to everyone. And let everything that you have planned fly.”
