During the early hours of Thursday, a strike was carried out by U.S. military forces that Central Command deemed as an act of “self-defense,” aimed at preventing Houthi unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their ground control station from causing harm.
The US military, as reported by Centcom, detected a ground control station for UAVs and various unmanned aerial vehicles in locations of Yemen controlled by the Houthi. After examination, it was determined that these presented an immediate danger to both American naval vessels and commercial ships within the vicinity.
Centcom replied by stating that it had taken down the UAV station and carried out defensive strikes against ten one-way UAVs.
Centcom has stressed the objective of this measure is to protect freedom of navigation and improve safety measures in international waters for American Naval vessels, as well as commercial ships.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has recently reaffirmed the designation of the Houthi militants, a Yemeni rebel group with ties to Iran, as a terrorist organization to address wider concerns. This decision aims to prevent attacks on vital shipping routes in the Middle East and is part of continuous efforts towards that end. The State Department claims this action will greatly assist in limiting financial support available for the aforementioned party’s operations, thereby reducing their capacity more efficiently.
Blinken stated that the restrictions and penalties would be implemented with a 30-day delay to guarantee minimal consequences on delivering aid and commercial goods to civilians in Yemen.
