A Thai government minister is issuing a stern warning about the potential closure of Facebook within Thailand, citing the platform’s insufficient efforts to vet the advertisements it showcases. This negligence, according to the minister, exposes users to the risk of falling victim to costly scams.

Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society in Thailand, released a statement on Monday expressing his willingness to pursue legal action in criminal court by the end of the month with the objective of shutting down Facebook in Thailand.

In his statement, Chaiwut revealed that Thai authorities had previously approached Meta, the parent company of Facebook, urging them to remove deceitful advertisements. This appeal resulted in the blocking of more than 5,000 fraudulent ads. However, the issue persists.

The minister highlighted the recurrence of ads and fabricated profiles on Facebook that feigned legitimacy as esteemed financial and investment advisors, promising substantial returns. These misleading advertisements tempt unsuspecting individuals into schemes where they ultimately lose their hard-earned money.

On Tuesday, when contacted by phone, Meta in Thailand requested that inquiries be sent via email to their press department. However, no immediate response was received concerning the minister’s accusations.

The swiftness of the court’s response to the case, if formally filed by the ministry, remains uncertain.
