Meta Platforms has announced the launch of the web version of its novel text-centric social media platform, Threads. This move is strategically aimed at retaining professional users and gaining a competitive edge over its former rival, X, previously known as Twitter.

Users of Threads will now have the convenience of accessing the microblogging platform via their computer browsers, as confirmed by the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, revealed in a Threads post that the web-based version would gradually become available to users “over the next few days.”

This highly anticipated expansion could significantly bolster Threads’ popularity among influential users such as brands, corporate accounts, advertisers, and journalists. These groups can now harness the platform’s capabilities on a larger screen, enhancing their engagement and interaction.

Threads garnered immense attention with over 100 million sign-ups for the mobile app in just five days following its initial release on July 5th. However, its initial surge in popularity waned as users returned to the more familiar platform, X.

Within a slightly over a month, the daily active users of the Android version of the Threads app dropped from a peak of 49.3 million to 10.3 million, as reported by the analytics platform Similarweb on August 10th.
