Ohio Man Gives Up Food for All-Beer Diet for Lent

When Lent arrives, some people will give up drinking pop and others may stay off Facebook the entire time. However, an Ohio man took it a little further for his time during Lent, since he decided to give up food for a liquid diet, but with a twist. The liquid diet is beer.

For four years now, Del Hall has made his liquid diet an annual tradition. For Hall, it’s all about renewal, as he said, “It’s a way to get back into a healthy mindset, to look at food in a healthy way. I decided I’m going to turn this into a beer diet to show people that you can use beer in a healthy way and not vilify it as this evil alcohol,” WCPO reported.

Hall is 31 days into the “diet” and says he has lost 25 pounds. While he is doing the all-beer diet, it’s not about over-indulging in beer. He said, “We’re in for the artistry. The love and passion of beer, (I’m) not into it just to get drunk,” WCPO stated.

You would think that after 31 days of drinking beer only, you would get sick of it, right? However, by drinking beer, it does give Hall some variety in the options he could choose from. He said, “Sweet? I’ll drink a milk stout or pastry stout. If I want something fruity, I’ll drink one with raspberries in it. There’s so many things that can fill your cravings when you’re hungry.”

While he is doing an all-beer diet, it looks like Hall is hydrating himself with water, as well as taking a multi-vitamin every day, which his doctor ordered.

Is an all-beer diet safe? Dr. Steve Feagins, Chief Clinical Officer of Mercy Health Cincinnati, said, “There are famously liquid diets of all types. You don’t see any books about the beer diet. It’s not sustainable. Thankfully this is a Lent thing. Not a forever thing. Certainly not going to become a best seller book.”

While it seems like a wild thing to do, Hall is also doing it for a good cause. Each year he raises money for charity. This year he is raising money for the Ken Anderson Alliance, an organization that helps people with physical disabilities.

This is a special charity for Hall, as he said, “I have a 15-year-old daughter who has cerebral palsy. Even though she’s a juvenile now, she’ll be an adult with a disability. The Ken Anderson Alliance is an amazing foundation that supports adults with disabilities. I feel like someday my daughter will want to use these services that Ken Anderson provides.”

So far, Hall has raised $5,000 for the charity, but they have a brewery walk planned for April 24 and he’s hoping the event will help raise $25,000 for the Ken Anderson Alliance.
