As Argentina grapples with an intense heatwave, dozens of residents in the central Cordoba province were forced to evacuate their homes on Tuesday as wildfires continued to rage. Dramatic images and videos captured massive flames encroaching on hills near populated areas, with firefighters battling to control the blazes, which had reached some homes. The extent of the damage to residential properties remained unclear.

The provincial government reported a contingent of 960 firefighters engaged in combatting the wildfires, supported by eight firefighting planes and two helicopters. Local reports confirmed the evacuation of dozens of individuals.

There was a glimmer of hope that expected rains on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning could help quell the fires that had rapidly spread due to strong winds.

Cordoba Governor Juan Schiaretti took to social media to urge the public to heed the advice of firefighting teams and authorities working in the affected areas. He emphasized the importance of saving lives, expressing readiness for evacuations as necessary.

Argentina’s National Fire Management Service reported five active wildfires in the region on Tuesday.

A 27-year-old named Ulises Xarate was taken into custody on suspicion of starting a fire near Villa Carlos Paz in the Punilla region of the province. According to local media citing prosecutor Jorgelina Gómez, Xarate admitted to igniting a campfire to brew coffee but lost control of the flames due to the strong winds.

In response to the crisis, the provincial government dispatched trucks carrying potable water, food, mattresses, and blankets to aid those affected by the blazes. Cordoba’s Government and Security Minister, Julián López, took to social media to stress the importance of heightened preventive measures given the adverse weather conditions.
