Two school districts in the vicinity of Philadelphia have made the difficult decision to close their campuses on Tuesday due to an ongoing manhunt for an escaped murderer, who has been repeatedly captured on surveillance cameras in the area, according to authorities.

The fugitive in question, Danelo Cavalcante, a 34-year-old convicted murderer who managed to slip away from custody last Thursday, was most recently spotted on a trail camera situated at Longwood Gardens in Chester County on Monday night, officials disclosed.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, state police Lt. Col. George Bivens expressed confidence that Cavalcante would eventually make a mistake that would lead to his capture, citing the incident in which he unwittingly walked in front of a trail camera as an example.

With Cavalcante still at large and considered a potential threat, both the Unionville-Chadds Ford and Kennett Consolidated School Districts have decided to suspend on-campus instruction for the day. Students at the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District were instructed to check in with their teachers via Google Meet in preparation for a “Flexible Instructional Day (FID).”

The Kennett Consolidated School District, out of an abundance of caution, announced the closure of all its campuses and offices for the day.

Cavalcante is also sought in connection with a murder case in his native Brazil, and police have recorded a plea from his mother in Portuguese, urging her son to surrender. Helicopters and police vehicles patrolling the search areas are broadcasting this message, hoping that Cavalcante will hear it and heed his mother’s advice.

Investigators are in contact with various family members and friends of the escaped convict, hoping to uncover any information that could lead to his whereabouts or intentions.

“We have thoroughly investigated all leads, including his family, friends, associates, and any contacts he may have had, even while in jail. We continue to pursue any leads that might be helpful,” Bivens stated.

Search teams are facing challenges navigating the dense terrain where they believe Cavalcante is hiding. “What we’re dealing with are extensive wooded areas with dense undergrowth, making it difficult for our search teams to maintain visual contact with each other. There are moments when they lose sight of each other,” explained Bivens.

“There are numerous locations where someone could conceal themselves.”

Regarding Cavalcante’s appearance, authorities noted that he has not made significant changes. However, since his escape, he has acquired a backpack and a hooded sweatshirt, which were believed to have been obtained by breaking into a car or home.

“He is clearly in escape mode and appears to be desperate,” Bivens remarked.

In the meantime, police are advising residents within several miles of the Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township to secure their vehicles and all other structures, especially outhouses, supply sheds, and outbuildings outside their primary residences.

“It’s crucial that we maintain pressure on him as we continue this pursuit. We want to deny him the luxury of rest,” emphasized Bivens.

Cavalcante was convicted of first-degree murder on August 16 for the fatal stabbing of a 33-year-old former girlfriend. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
