Jimmy Buffett, the iconic singer known for his sun-soaked melodies celebrating coastal living, has passed away from a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer, according to a statement released on his official website.
Buffett, aged 76, succumbed to Merkel cell cancer, a diagnosis that had been kept private until news of his death emerged. The statement also revealed that the “Margaritaville” singer passed away at his residence in Sag Harbor, New York, situated near the Hamptons.
Remarkably, Buffett had been waging a four-year battle against this uncommon and fast-spreading cancer while continuing to entertain his fans. His final performance was a surprise appearance in Rhode Island in early July, as noted in the statement.

Merkel cell carcinoma, medically recognized for its rarity, is notorious for its rapid spread, often extending to areas beyond the skin, as detailed by the National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic. Risk factors for this condition include extensive sun exposure, a compromised immune system, a history of other cancers, and being of fair complexion and over 50 years of age.
