A man wielding a machete attacked several residents in his building in northeastern Switzerland, injuring five people, including a baby, police reported on Friday.
The incident occurred in St. Gallen, with police receiving an alert shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. The assailant, a 34-year-old Swiss man, targeted a pregnant woman visiting her father, who lived in the building. Her 66-year-old father suffered severe injuries while trying to protect her.
Neighbors who witnessed the attack pursued the attacker outside the building. During this confrontation, the attacker injured a 31-year-old female resident and her 3-month-old baby. The neighbors managed to restrain the assailant until the police arrived and arrested him, though one helper was injured in the process.
The suspect also sustained self-inflicted injuries, according to the police. Fortunately, none of the injuries sustained by the victims are life-threatening.

Upon investigation, police discovered flammable liquid and gas in the suspect’s apartment, prompting an evacuation of the building. Authorities noted that the man was previously known to them for psychological issues.
