Who would’ve thought that the World Cup will have an interesting turn when team Iran calls out U.S. team about a post? After the match, the US men’s national team successfully won against Iran with 1-0 score. The match was filled with tension, not only about the competition, but also due to the controversial post made for the US team.
The controversial post is about the score board of their game with Iran, but an alteration of the Iranian flag was made. It was posted on 3 of the US team’s social media account.
The image contained a graphic of the Group’s standings, with each national flag representing the countries involved. While every other nation’s flag looked the same, the now-deleted graphic displayed the Iranian flag with just the colors Green, White, and Red.
The emblem of the Islamic Republic wasn’t displayed, and the reasoning U.S. soccer gave to CNN is that the federation wanted to support the human right cause for women. As a result, State Media in Iran reported on Sunday that FIFA should have dealt the United States a 10-game suspension, effective immediately, for a “distorted image” of the nation’s flag.
U.S. Men’s National Team coach, Greg Berhalter explained that the team didn’t know about the graphic post. Their only focus is the match and the team to perform well.
In fairness, the team’s strategy to dial in and focus on football worked resoundingly. The U.S. Men’s National team will aim to continue their march toward World Cup Glory this Saturday vs. The Netherlands.
