Renowned for his creation of the immensely popular dance anthem “Cha Cha Slide,” DJ Casper has passed away at the age of 58. His wife, Kim, confirmed that he succumbed to cancer on Monday after a valiant seven-year battle.
Born and raised in Chicago as Willie Perry Jr., Casper conceived “Cha Cha Slide,” initially titled “Casper Slide Pt. 1,” in 1998 for his nephew’s aerobics class. The song began gaining momentum within local fitness circles, prompting Casper to unveil a revamped version in 2000, known as “Casper Slide Pt. 2,” which soon caught the attention of radio stations.
Chicago’s M.O.B. Records eventually became involved, propelling the track to newfound prominence in the city by 2004, and subsequently, around the globe. The track surged to the top spot on the U.K. Singles chart, as well as on the dance charts in Scotland and Ireland, that same year.
In 2016, Casper received a diagnosis of kidney and liver cancer. Despite his own challenges, he held onto the belief that “Cha Cha Slide” could serve as a beacon of positivity for those grappling with their own adversities.

“To all those grappling with cancer, understand that you possess cancer, but it doesn’t possess you,” Casper emphasized during that time. “So, keep on dancing to the ‘Cha Cha Slide.'”
