In Arlington, Virginia, a residential area was jolted by a massive home explosion when police were in the midst of investigating an individual who had discharged a flare gun multiple times from inside a home on Monday night.
Although law enforcement officers escaped serious injuries, the condition of the suspect within the exploded residence remains uncertain, as per authorities.
Social media footage depicted a substantial fireball and fragments of what appeared to be the roof soaring into the air during the explosion, which residents claimed reverberated across miles in the Washington, D.C., suburb.
Around 4:45 p.m., neighbors reported possible gunfire, prompting Arlington County police spokesperson Ashley Savage to confirm that someone had indeed fired a flare gun. Subsequently, officers secured a search warrant for the residence situated in the 800 block of North Burlington Street.
Efforts to establish communication with the suspect via phone and loudspeakers proved futile, leading to a tense situation. According to a police statement, as officers were attempting to execute the search warrant, the suspect discharged several rounds, believed to be from a firearm, inside the dwelling.
The explosion occurred approximately at 8:25 p.m., causing a significant fire. The fire department managed to bring the flames under control by around 10:40 p.m., though spot fires still required attention.
Due to safety concerns, officials were unable to enter the home, leaving the fate of any occupants uncertain. The suspect, who was inside during the explosion, was the only individual known to be in the house at that time, according to Ashley Savage.
The individual had discharged the flare gun approximately 30 to 40 times from inside the residence into the surrounding neighborhood, according to a police statement released early Tuesday. The identity of the person involved has not been disclosed, and the circumstances surrounding the explosion are subject to ongoing investigation.

Residents in the vicinity, such as Carla Rodriguez from South Arlington, described hearing the explosion from over 2 miles away. One local resident, Bob Maynes, likened the impact to a tree falling on his house, causing the entire structure to shake.
U.S. Representative Don Beyer (D-Va.) expressed his deep concern, describing the incident as “very, very scary” and commended the first responders for their prompt action. Minor injuries were reported among police officers, but none required hospitalization, according to the county police department.
