A death row inmate who is mentally unstable asked to be on suicide watch but got denied. Officials said this denial made the inmate want to chop off his penis and slit his wrist with a razor.

Harry Eugene Hodges is on death row for his crime from 1990. He murdered a repairman.

Based on the records, Hodges showed his unstable behavior earlier this month due to a special food package. From then on, he started revolting by smearing feces, slitting his wrists, and so on.

Hodges appealed to be on suicide watch from then on.

According to Kelley Henry, his lawyer, a “high-ranking” officer told the person treating Hodges was manipulating the situation so he could be placed on suicide watch.

When the appeal got denied, Hodges decided to cut his penis off in his cell.

Fortunately, the doctors were able to attach the removed body part. Hodges is now in his cell, but with restraints to prevent other alarming actions from him.

Hodges agreed to take medication and was then returned to the four-point restraints.

Henry also mentioned that Hodges suffered from various mental illnesses like bipolar disorder. That’s why he believed Hodges should have access to professional health care. His mental situation is currently unstable, possibly leading to another self-harming activity.
