Eastern Michigan Apologizes to South Alabama After Player’s Punch Sparks Brawl

Eastern Michigan’s sports director issued an apology to South Alabama on the subsequent day of an altercation that occurred after the 68 Ventures Bowl. In the aftermath of South Alabama’s decisive 59-10 victory over Eastern Michigan at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, an EMU player intruded into the gathering of South Alabama’s players, cheer squad, and band as they prepared to sing their school song.

During this moment, the unidentified EMU player delivered a punch to the back of a South Alabama player’s head, inciting a brawl. Subsequently, another South Alabama player intervened, dragging the EMU player onto the field. This set off a chaotic scene, with members from both teams engaging in altercations.

In response to the incident, Eastern Michigan’s athletic director, Scott Wetherbee, expressed strong condemnation in a statement on Sunday, labeling the actions of some EMU student-athletes as “completely unacceptable” and expressing deep upset and embarrassment. Wetherbee echoed the sentiments shared by EMU coach Chris Creighton in a postgame news conference, emphasizing that such incidents have no place in the football program. Apologies were extended to the EMU community, the South Alabama team, and its fans.

Wetherbee disclosed that communication had taken place between EMU and South Alabama’s athletic directors. Additionally, Coach Creighton reached out to Jaguars coach Kane Wommack. Wetherbee affirmed that EMU had initiated contact with the Mid-American Conference commissioner, and collaborative efforts would be made to investigate the incident thoroughly. Assurance was given that appropriate actions would be taken as more information becomes available.
