The Biden administration intends to appoint a key White House aide to helm the newly established Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, slated to be announced on Wednesday, according to a source within the administration requesting anonymity.

Elizabeth Kelly, currently serving as an economic policy adviser to President Joe Biden, will assume leadership of the AI Safety Institute at the National Institute for Standards and Technology, a division of the Commerce Department. Kelly’s instrumental involvement in crafting the executive order that laid the groundwork for the institute underscores her role in shaping the administration’s tech policies.

According to a preliminary announcement obtained by media, Lael Brainard, the Director of the White House National Economic Council, highlighted Kelly’s contributions, citing her efforts in shaping the president’s tech and financial regulation agenda and fostering alliances across various stakeholders.

The institute’s mandate is pivotal in advancing AI technology responsibly. By July, it aims to establish standardized “red team” testing protocols for major AI developers, ensuring the safety of AI systems for both consumers and businesses.

Recognizing the necessity of such safety measures to unleash the potential benefits of AI technology, the administration underscores the importance of building trust through standardized safety assessments, which will facilitate broader AI adoption.

While the federal government has recently mandated AI companies to conduct safety tests, the absence of universally recognized standards underscores the significance of the institute’s impending work to finalize such protocols by the summer.
